Music in Williamwood
My name is Sarah Alexander and I started as Director of Music and Organist here at Williamwood in November 2015. I’m in my 4th year of studying music at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where my principal study is the classical accordion. I started playing organ in my hometown of Buckie when my grandad retired and I’ve played at various churches around Scotland. Music plays a big part of my day-to-day life, whether it’s learning at the RCS, teaching traditional accordion with Glasgow Folk-Music Workshops, or being here at Williamwood- there’s always something to do!
There’s always something musical going on here, whether it’s having musicians in to make our Sunday services a bit different, putting on concerts to show you the next generation of musicians who are on the peak of their music careers, or having something for children who may be interested in music.
Church Choir
Williamwood Parish Church Choir comprises of 8 sopranos, 4 altos, 3 tenors and 3 basses. While this is a fine size of choir to have, I’m always keen to welcome new members. Even if you’re not sure if you’ll enjoy it, you can come to one of our rehearsals to try it for yourself. We run from September to April, and normally do an anthem each week as well as something different for Christmas and Easter. We have a great variety of sheet music which has built up over the years, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Requests are also welcome!
We are currently working on music for our Christmas services- if you are interested in joining our choir for our Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, then you can email me at sarah1995alexander@gmail.com for more details. This will be a very special service taking place on the evening of Sunday 17th December. We are also delighted to be joined by instrumentalists and singers from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for this occasion.
Instrumentalists
As a musician, I’m always trying to do something different now and then to keep people interested in the music side of things here in Williamwood. One way I’ve been doing this is by having musicians in to play in our Sunday services, where they’ll play music before, after & during the service. It also gives musicians a different setting to play in, as they don’t have many opportunities to play in churches apart from concert performances. If you play a musical instrument and would be interested playing in a service, then we will be happy to hear from you!
Summer Concert Series
Started in June 2016, we have run a variety of evening concerts in our church, taking place on the last Sunday of the Summer months. These normally showcase the talents of musicians who are either studying full-time, are local to Clarkston, or are full time musicians in Glasgow. Our concert series will continue in June 2018, and details of performers will be available from April 2018.
